Husqvarna riders take step into the unknown


Danny Kent and Nikas Ajo compete at Autodromo Termas de Rio Hondo this weekend, mind as new circuit hosts Red Bull Argentinian Grand Prix.

This is a fourth full season in the World Championship for Danny Kent and Niklas Ajo, but neither have ever ridden in South America before. This weekend, the Autodromo Termas de Rio Hondo in Argentina gives them a chance to do so for the first time. The track is unknown to all Moto3 riders, as only a handful of Moto2 and MotoGP riders took part in a two-day test at the circuit last year. The 4.8km layout features 14 corners, of which 5 are lefts and 9 rights. A 1km straight also awaits the riders, who have few reference points in Argentina. Husqvarna competitors Danny Kent and Niklas Ajo are optimistic about improving their results for a third consecutive round.

Red Bull Husqvarna Ajo’s Kent made a great comeback at Austin to place eighth in the race, besting his thirteenth place in Qatar. The Briton will be hoping to improve his practice and qualifying showings in order to start the race from higher up on the grid.

Niklas Ajo also wants to continue climbing the standings, following his taking his first points of 2014 at the last GP. The Avant Tecno Husqvarna Ajo rider is satisfied with the work carried out at the last race and was only denied a better  result by a tyre problem. The aim for the weekend will be to take as many points as possible and keep looking ahead.

The inaugural Red Bull Argentinian Grand Prix Moto3 race takes place on Sunday from 11am at the Autodromo Termas de Rio Hondo. Before that, Friday and Saturday sessions will decide the setups and grid positions of the riders.

“As always, I’ve been training hard –mostly in the gym– to be ready for this race. We are going to need to be strong, because jet lag leaves me tired and it is important to adapt quickly to be at 100% as soon as possible. All I know about this new track is what I’ve gathered from the internet, some maps and some videos of races here. It looks good and seems to be very fast. However, we need to check it out in person and undertake the first few laps to see what really lies ahead. We need to improve in practice. We have to try to be faster and more comfortable, and also focus on finding a good setting because the bike works and has potential. We need to keep taking steps forward and look for at least a Top 5 finish.”

Niklas Ajo,
“After the last Grand Prix I rested a little in Miami. I am not completely happy with how the last race went, as a tyre problem prevented us from getting a better result from a weekend that had been going very well. In general we had taken a step forward from Qatar. To prepare for this weekend I’ve been looking at races and information on the internet, as that is the only thing that I can do before I get there. Each track is different and so I don’t know if I will find it tough to adapt or not. A Top 10 finish has to be the goal for this third race. We’ll have to work hard for it, but we are prepared to do that. The Husqvarna is working great and the difference between riders is very small, so the difference will be the rider-bike combination.”
