Barry Baltus one step away from victory at Alcarras

04/06/2017

Ajo Academy rider finishes second, 1 tenth behind the race winner. First Top 5 for Lorenzo Fellon and 11th position for Adrian Fernandez, in a wet PreMoto3 race.

The Ajo Academy had a positive trip to the Alcarras Circuit this weekend, for the third round of the PreMoto3 class in the RFME Spanish Championship. Although the asphalt was wet and rain began to fall again on the third lap of the race, Barry Baltus finished second, taking his third podium in the space of four races. Lorenzo Fellon took a big step forward, placing in the top five in the race and qualifying on the front row -both his best results in the class. Adrian Fernandez placed 11th and earned 5 points, as well as valuable experience in wet conditions.
Baltus started from sixth on the grid, and the Belgian was in the front group for the whole race. He led the way on the last lap, although finally he missed out on victory by just 1 tenth of a second.
Despite the wet conditions, Lorenzo Fellon was very comfortable with his BeOn bike and had his best race in PreMoto3, starting from third position. The French rider, who was as high as fourth at one point, placed fifth for his best result to date.

For Adrian Fernandez, the weekend was a learning experience, as he was not accustomed to rainy conditions. In addition, the Spanish rider suffered a crash in QP1 that made him lose confidence, although little by little he regained it in the race. He finished eleventh on Sunday.

Baltus is second in the overall standings with 65 points, just 10 off the series leader; Adrian Fernandez is ninth with 24 points and Lorenzo Fellon eleventh with 19. The next round of the RFME Spanish Championship will take place in three weeks, on June 25th at the Navarra Circuit.

7 BARRY BALTUS
“I’m really happy about how the weekend has gone. We adapted well to the wet conditions and we slowly found a good pace. During the race I tried to stay calm and not crash. On the last lap I led the race, although in the end I was overtaken. Anyway, I’m happy because we fought to the end and we were in a position to win. In general I am very satisfied with all the work we have done, we are second in the championship and we just need to fight to keep up there.”

30 LORENZO FELLON
“I had some good practice sessions and I started from third. I started well, but on the first corner I lost some positions. Several riders escaped and I stayed back with Carlos Tatay, with whom I had a good fight. When there were two laps remaining, I passed him and I got up to fourth, but on the last corner of the last lap he retook the position and I finished fifth. I felt very comfortable with the bike in wet conditions and we did a good job with the team this weekend.”

31 ADRIAN FERNANDEZ
“It’s been a bit of a tough weekend, because in QP1 a rider suffered a highside in front of me and I fell after his bike hit me, so I lost some confidence. In addition, it is one of the very first times I’ve ridden in the wet and I am still learning to handle myself in these situations. In the race I made a good start and I got up to seventh, although I did not feel comfortable in the rain and in the end I finished eleventh by myself. I’ll take away everything I’ve learned this weekend in the rain and the fact we’ve got a good setup for the bike. We will give our all at the next round to achieve a better result.”
