Öncü fights for the front positions at the FIM CEV in Barcelona

The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider finished eighth in the second race, despite an incident with another rider. Deniz was unable to finish race one, after a crash in front of him.

The Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit hosted the fourth round of the FIM CEV 2019, celebrating the fifth and sixth race in the FIM Moto3 Junior World Championship. Deniz Öncü had shown a strong pace throughout the weekend, achieving his first pole position in the series on Saturday and leading in both of Sunday’s races. Finally, the young Turk walked away with eighth in the second race, not finishing the first competition after being unable to avoid contact with a crash ahead of him.

Deniz Öncü maintained his first position at the start of Race 1, but an incident on the third lap caused the contest to be restarted, at a reduced length of 10 laps. The Turkish youngster managed to stay calm and, despite giving up a few positions at the beginning of the contest, he was able to make up ground and lead once again. Unfortunately, the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider fell six laps from the end, when he was riding in the front group, unable to dodge the fall of one of his rivals.

In Race 2, Deniz Öncü made a good start, placing himself into the lead in the first corner. The 15-year-old established himself in the leading group of seven riders, a whirlwind of overtakes taking place throughout the contest. With eight laps remaining, Deniz came together with a rival, a manoeuvre that forced him to lose positions. Eventually he would cross the line in eighth place as the flag came out.

The next round of the FIM CEV will take place at the MotorLand Aragon Circuit on July 14th, with just a single race for the FIM Moto3 Junior World Championship.

“I’m happy with how the weekend went. In the first race I felt very good, but I had some issues with the rear tyre. We had a solid start, however an incident forced the contest to be stopped and we had to repeat the start procedure. I managed to get in the front group but, with six laps to go, a rider went down in front of me and I could not do anything to avoid him. In the second race we were able to be at the front again, although we still had some problems. I had the chance to lead and finally I finished in the points, eighth. I am looking forward to the next race in Aragon, where we will give our hundred per cent to be ahead.”
