Öncü amongst fastest riders in German GP qualifying session

The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 rider went straight into Q2, after finishing second in FP3, and will start from the fourth row of the grid at Sachsenring.

The German Grand Prix is bringing out the best in the Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 team and Can Öncü. Following a strong performance on the opening day, today the Turkish youngster had his greatest qualifying day of the year so far. The 15-year-old went directly into Q2, after finishing second in FP3, and tomorrow he will begin the race from the fourth row of the grid, in 12th.

The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 rookie was competitive from early in the morning, lapping at the top of the timesheets in FP3. On his last attempt in that practice, Can recorded a personal best of 1:26.112, improving on his Friday effort by more than a second. After a total of 22 laps, Öncü reached the top of the classification, just missing out on the first placement, with 0.068s down on the fastest rider.

With that result, the Turkish youngster moved straight into Q2 in the afternoon, and was able to fight for a spot towards the front of the grid. On his last lap, the Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 rider set a time of 1:26.860 – seven tenths off pole – which positioned him in 12th place in qualifying at the German GP.

The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 team is now ready to face the ninth race of the season, held tomorrow at 11 am local time, with the riders set to battle over 27 laps.
