Great memories for Can Öncü on return to Misano

11/09/2019

The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 rider is ready for the 13th round at the circuit where he was proclaimed champion of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup last year.

The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 team and Can Öncü are all set to return to action after two weeks of rest following the British Grand Prix. One year on from winning the 2018 Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, the Turkish youngster is ready to race again at this track. The San Marino and Riviera di Rimini GP is the first of two back-to-back races in September, providing the 16-year-old with further opportunities to continue his progression in the Moto3 World Championship.

Can Öncü arrives at Misano in an optimistic mood, with two years of experience under his belt there as a Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup rider. In fact, last season the Turkish rider enjoyed one of the key moments of his sporting career at Misano, as he clinched the title of the promotional series there and secured his ride in the 2019 Moto3 World Championship, despite not being 16 years old. That same weekend, the Red Bull KTM Ajo rookie also achieved pole position and the victory.

The 23-lap Moto3 race will take place on Sunday 15th September at 11.00 am local time. The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 team have previously featured on the Misano podium courtesy of victories from Sandro Cortese (2012) and Brad Binder (2016), as well as a third place finish by Jack Miller in 2014 and a second position by Miguel Oliveira in 2015.

61 CAN ÖNCÜ

“I’m ready for Misano after two weeks of training and I’m going into the San Marino Grand Prix with great motivation. If we work hard we can produce a good performance this weekend, as it’s a circuit that I like. Also, in the past, when I was racing in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, the track was favourable for me. My goal is to finish in the points so that both my team and my country are happy with the result. I hope it will be a good GP.”
