Fernandez on podium in first ever virtual Moto3 race

03/05/2020

The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider transferred his success on-track to gaming, thanks to a third position in the Virtual Spanish Grand Prix.

In a fun and close race, Raul Fernandez took his virtual KTM to the podium in a recreation of the Spanish round of the Moto3 World Championship. He was very competitive from the start, managing to lead the contest until contact with another rider put him out of contention for victory.

The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider started from the second row of the grid, after a quick qualifying session held minutes before the 8-lap race against 9 other riders. Fernandez decided to go for broke early and only one of his rivals was able to keep up. However a collision between the two meant he crashed with two laps to go. Raul would eventually cross the line third.

This result means that Red Bull KTM Ajo are one of the few teams to take a podium in both a real and virtual Moto3 race.

“This was a very fun experience, and I hope the audience had as much fun as we did. Before the start I was nervous and tense, as if I was really on the grid waiting for the lights to go out.
We had a very short time for qualifying – only 5 minutes – and I managed to place fifth. The race was much better for me: I took the lead and I broke away with another rider. Unfortunately, with two laps to go, we made contact and I went down. Luckily I was able to recover and finish third.
I hope that, in the difficult situation we are going through, the fans had fun today with the contests which – especially in Moto3 – were really enjoyable.”
