Double podium for Red Bull KTM Ajo at Spanish Grand Prix

19/07/2020

Tetsuta Nagashima and Jorge Martin place second and third, respectively, at first race back for Moto2.

The Red Bull KTM Ajo team resumed the season with a brilliant podium double, thanks to Tetsuta Nagashima’s second position and Jorge Martin’s third place at the Spanish Grand Prix. With this result, the Japanese rider leads the way in the overall standings in the Moto2 class. The advantage is also extended in the battle for the 2020 Teams title.

Nagashima got a good start from the third row of the grid and, in less than one lap, climbed to sixth place, latching onto the leading group. Tetsuta set a great pace that allowed him to rise to second position in just five laps. The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 rider attempted to chase down the race leader, setting a series of fast lap times, and finally finished second, claiming a second consecutive podium of the season.

Poleman Jorge Martin held the hole shot and led the way on the opening laps of the race. At the halfway point, the Spaniard lost touch with the top two finishers, and a crash from a rival rider left him alone to take third place.

After the Spanish Grand Prix, Tetsuta Nagashima remains the series leader with 45 points – 17 clear of his nearest rival. Jorge Martin is 7th with 16 points. The Red Bull KTM Moto2 team will remain at Jerez for the third race of 2020, which will take place from July 24-26th.

Aki Ajo – Team manager

“It was a great weekend back for us in Moto2. It was difficult to predict what would happen, so we tried to hold on for a good result. We have to be very happy about the two podiums that we earned today. Both Tetsuta [Nagashima] and Jorge [Martin] performed well, right from the test on Wednesday. They have shown that both are strong enough to continue at this level next week at the third round of the season.”

88 JORGE MARTIN

“It was a positive day for us. Taking another podium and the points that come with it is undoubtedly a good result. We must continue working hard to take another step forward, which will allow us to close the gap that separated us from the front today. However, we had a great race and we held onto third position, keeping the advantage over the rider who was chasing me on the final laps. I am happy and I hope to continue in the same way next week.”

45 TETSUTA NAGASHIMA

“I am very happy with this result. This weekend we were struggling a bit but, in the end, we managed to rise above it all and finish the race in a good position. I trusted the team and myself and I pushed hard from the start. I gave my all. Today we took some important points for the championship, which is a positive thing.”
