Fernandez achieves first Moto3 podium at Aragon Grand Prix

18/10/2020

The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider claims third place with an exceptional performance on the eleventh round of the season, whilst Kaito Toba finishes 11th.

Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 and Raul Fernandez received a just reward for their work both this weekend and this season, claiming a podium at the Aragon Grand Prix. The Spaniard took third position for his first visit to the World Championship rostrum, completing one of his main objectives for 2020. Teammate Kaito Toba had a solid Sunday, climbing eight positions to finish 11th.

Starting from pole, Fernandez used his great pace to hold the lead at the initial part of the race. The Spaniard pushed hard to try to break away from the group and only three riders were able to keep with him. The chasing pack would gradually close the gap, producing a battle in which there was a series of overtaking moves. The 19-year-old would hold his own amidst the chaos to cross the line in the third position, earning a well-deserved first Grand Prix podium.

Toba, who took off from the eighth row of the grid, would keep 19th place in the early going. He gradually moved his way up the order in the chasing pack, reaching the Top 10. On the final laps, the Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 rider lost touch with those ahead of him, but maintained his pace to take the chequered flag 11th and add further points to his tally.

With today’s result, Fernandez occupies the 7th place in the Moto3 World Championship, with 89 points. Toba is 18th with 24. The Red Bull KTM Ajo team will remain in Aragon, where they take on the Grand Prix of Teruel from October 23-25th.

AKI AJO – TEAM MANAGER

“I am very happy with the podium for Raul [Fernandez]. We have been very strong throughout the season: in the contest and – above all – in practice. He put in a great performance and today we really feel that we took a step forward in the race. After this reward, I am sure that his mind will be much clearer and he will be able to take more good results in the coming rounds. As for Kaito [Toba], he had a great Sunday despite his big crash yesterday. He was close to entering the Top 10.”

“I have no words to describe how this feels. We have finally done it! I want to thank the team and my family, because without them this would not have been possible. We had a perfect Grand Prix. Next week we will continue working in the same way and we will try to make the most of this second opportunity in Aragon to get another great result.”

27 KAITO TOBA

“We had a positive performance in the race. I started from far back, but I was able to quickly recover positions. We had a good pace, but halfway through the race there was a small error that lost me some time. The important thing is that today I felt well and we were fast. We have to continue working in the same way next week.”
