Masterful victory for Acosta at German Grand Prix

20/06/2021

The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 rider claims his fourth win of the season in a close race at the Sachsenring. Jaume Masia crashes out midway through the contest.

The German Grand Prix had a brilliant end for Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 and Pedro Acosta, who took a hard-fought victory at the Sachsenring. The rookie made it four wins from eight rounds in the Moto3 World Championship, with what was also his fifth podium of 2021. The series leader extended his lead at the top of the overall standings. Jaume Masia had an excellent comeback curtailed by a crash at the start of lap 15 when running in sixth position.

Acosta began from the fifth row of the grid and pushed very hard at the start of the race, to climb from 13th to first in just five laps. The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 talent would have to contend with constant overtaking moves amongst the leading group but stayed focused amidst a series of incidents and managed the final lap of the German GP to perfection. His fourth win of the season continues an incredible rookie campaign on the world stage.

Masia experienced the difficulties of starting from the middle of the grid, taking off from the sixth row. Crowded out on the opening corner, he dropped six places, into 23rd. Nevertheless, the Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 rider refused to give up, hunting down the leading group through his persistence and pace. Unfortunately, at the start of lap 15 and running in sixth, he crashed out at Turn 1 as his race day came to a premature end.

Pedro Acosta continues to lead the Moto3 World Championship with 145 points. Jaume Masia is 3rd with 72. The Red Bull KTM Ajo duo will now travel to Assen, where the Dutch GP takes place from June 25th-27th.

Aki Ajo – Team Manager

“We have mixed feelings after today’s Moto3 contest. Of course, we are very happy with the performance from Pedro [Acosta] this weekend. Winning is always good but, as I have told him, I am more satisfied with how he managed the practice sessions, and how he kept his concentration. We have certainly taken a step forward in this regard and this is a great sign for the future. Unfortunately, Jaume [Masia] was having a great race but made a mistake. We have to learn from this and he has to be happy with how he managed the weekend – and stay motivated for the coming rounds.”

5 JAUME MASIA

“I want to thank the team for the work they did throughout the weekend. Unfortunately, I made a mistake that prevented us from completing the Grand Prix. Next week we have another opportunity at Assen, and we will try again. We will do everything we can to try to get a good result.”

37 PEDRO ACOSTA

“It was a tough and long race, but thanks to the team we started with the best possible setup for our bike at this track. I tried to break free from the group, but I saw that my rivals had a good pace, so I preferred to stay calm and prepare for the last lap – which was where things hadn’t worked out for us at the last few rounds. I am very happy and I want to thank my crew, my family and everybody who supports me.”
