“Our results are a dream come true.”
08/07/2021The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 rookie has had an outstanding first half of the season, with three wins and three podium finishes in the intermediate class.
Raul Fernandez is the revelation of the Moto2 World Championship this year, with three victories and three podiums from the 9 races contested to date. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rookie has made a speedy adaptation to the intermediate class, consolidating himself as one of the top riders. The Spaniard looks back at his strong start to the 2021 campaign.
How do you rate the first half of the 2021 season?
“It has been an incredible first half of the year. If we take away the mistake we made at the German GP, it was an almost perfect start, considering that I was new to the class. Our results have been a dream come true, and I’m very happy about it.”
What has been the best moment of the first nine races?
“For me, the best moment was Assen. After making a mistake in Germany, getting the victory in the way that we did, fighting back in the race, gave me a lot of self-confidence. I can’t think of a better way to end the first half of the year.”
What has been the key to adapting to the class with such astonishing speed?
“Every aspect has influenced things and been important. However, the team and all the work that we had done together in previous seasons have been the key to adapting to the class so quickly.”
What has the Red Bull KTM Ajo structure given to you over these two seasons?
“The team have given me the opportunity and the necessary tools to achieve my full potential. I have no words to thank them for all that they have done. It has been a pleasure growing up with Aki [Ajo]; he has helped me a lot. Good results are coming this year that are the fruit of all the work I have done before, and that is very important, without a doubt.”
“I would like to continue fighting for more great results, and we will work hard to make it happen.”
What does it mean for you to have a strong teammate like Remy Gardner?
“Remy [Gardner] is a very experienced rider who has been in the Moto2 class for several seasons. I learned a lot from him at the beginning of the year. Now we are both at the top and it’s nice that two teammates find themselves in this situation. However, Remy is very strong and it is not easy to beat him.”
What would you like to improve on after the summer break?
“I would like to continue in the same way as up until now. If we do that, I am sure that we will take further steps forward. What I would like to improve the most is my experience, but that is something that can only be done by completing races and putting kilometres under my belt.”
What is the goal for the remainder of the season?
“The objective will be to keep winning races. In the end that is what gives me the motivation to give one hundred percent in each session, and what makes me enjoy this sport the most. In the second half of the year, I would like to continue fighting for more great results, and we will work hard to make it happen.”
How are you going to spend the summer break?
“I want to rest for a couple of weeks to begin with, then back to work and take advantage of the remaining time to train and prepare for the return of the competition. I need to disconnect a little to come back hungry to get on the bike and give one hundred percent, as we have been doing so far.”
