Austrian GP: Vietti aims for another podium finish and Deniz returns to competition

14/08/2024

The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 duo is facing one of the most special rounds for the team. The Austrian Grand Prix sees Deniz Öncü back with Red Bull KTM Ajo after recovering from injury. The Turkish rider has sat out several races, but will compete this weekend at the team’s home round. Teammate Celestino Vietti faces the weekend after a podium finish at Silverstone.

Vietti had his best performance of the season at the British GP. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider enjoyed a solid weekend and fought for his first podium until the final corners. After falling just short at the German Grand Prix, Vietti got onto the rostrum and demonstrated his progress in a season in which new technical additions have been a challenge. He has good form at this weekend’s venue as well, with a victory last year. Having accrued 71 points, the Italian is ninth in the Moto2 standings.

Öncü finally returns after his injury in June that took him out of three races. He was unable to make it back for the British GP but continued to work hard with Austria in mind. Öncü has already completed training sessions on the bike with a test that the team carried out last week at MotorLand Aragón. For this weekend, the objective will be to make steady steps at Spielberg. He is 25th overall, with six points.

Red Bull KTM Ajo are seventh in the team standings with 77 points. They hold previous wins in Austria with Raul Fernandez in 2021 and Jorge Martin in 2020, as well as second place for Pedro Acosta in 2023. The Moto2 race takes place on Sunday, August 18th at 12:15 pm local time.

#13 CELESTINO VIETTI

“After the good result at the British GP we arrive in Austria fully motivated. I really like this track and in the past I have achieved very good results there, so I am very excited. I am really looking forward to being there. It is the home GP for the team, so we will do our best and try to keep the great feeling we had at the last race.”

#53 DENIZ ÖNCÜ

“After a long time I am back to racing at a very special circuit for the team, for RedBull and for KTM. It’s nice to be back in Austria, after coming back from an injury. However I am not setting any expectations for myself, because I really don’t know what I can or can’t do. However, of course I am always motivated to fight for the top positions. At the beginning of the weekend I want to see what my level is, in order to choose my target, but of course my goal is the points.”
