Vietti just a thousandth of a second off the front row in British GP

03/08/2024

The Italian rider will take off from fourth at Silverstone, with Marcel Schrötter 26th.

Weather conditions forced a change of approach for the Moto2 field on Saturday, but Celestino Vietti continued to be one of the strongest riders and will start in fourth position on Sunday. Marcel Schrötter fought to get a good feeling and earned a spot on the ninth row.

The second day at Silverstone began with the second practice session and with Vietti and Schrötter looking to improve their times. However, the drop in temperatures compared to Friday and high winds made things more difficult. Vietti remained in the top positions and, after a pit stop, set his best time on his eleventh and final lap. His 2:04.558 put him in eleventh position, although he finished inside the Top 5 on the combined timesheet. Schrötter made progress but did not have the best feeling, as he tried to increase his speed, coming very close to improving his times from Friday. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider focused on closing the gap to his rivals and, with a time of 2:05.499, he finished in 26th position.

Schrötter had to go into Q1, where he improved his feeling with the bike and upped his pace lap after lap. The German rider tried to secure his place in Q2 and set his best time of the weekend, although he finally got the twelfth fastest time: a 2:04.869, that put him 26th. Vietti went directly through to Q2, where he was increasingly competitive and consistent, and challenged for the front row of the grid. The Italian was in with a chance until the closing moments, and his 2:03.149 was only +0.026 away from the Top 3. He will take off from fourth on Sunday.

The Moto2 British GP race will take place on Sunday at 2:30 pm local time.

#13 CELESTINO VIETTI

“I am quite happy with today, because we had a good qualifying session. This morning I made some mistakes, but we knew what we needed to do to improve. In Qualifying we improved and we were strong, setting a good time. We were close to the first row, but the most positive thing is that we are competitive. Tomorrow it is going to be a long race but we will give everything to get as close to the front group as possible. We will give it our best shot.”

#32 MARCEL SCHRÖTTER

“We took a step forward today, even though I am not very happy with this morning’s session. I really tried to use the tyres wisely to close the gap to the guys in front and to get into Q2. On this difficult track it is crucial to be up to speed, and we struggled there. In Qualifying we improved a little, so I am happy about that. We still need to get used to the bike. In terms of race pace I think we are quicker and we can have a good race tomorrow.”
