Red Bull KTM Ajo finish Indonesian Grand Prix with positive conclusions

29/09/2024

Celestino Vietti is twelfth at Mandalika, with Deniz Öncü in ninth place.

The Indonesian Grand Prix came to an end on Sunday with a demanding race. The Red Bull KTM Ajo riders were very consistent from start to finish, moving up positions and managing the contest well to avoid making mistakes. Celestino Vietti finished in thirteenth position, while Deniz Öncü claimed tenth.

Vietti was forced to battle from the start after taking off from eighteenth position, due to his crash in qualifying. The Italian got off the line well and gained places in the early stages of the race. Vietti closed the gap to the group and maintained a good pace to get into the points, and pushed further after the first half of the race to finish twelfth.

Deniz Öncü had a great start at the Pertamina Mandalika Circuit. The rookie overtook several riders on the initial corners and maintained that pace. He challenged for the Top 5 and managed the race well amidst high temperatures on track. After occupying sixth position in the final laps, Öncü finally crossed the line ninth.

The Japanese Grand Prix is the next round on the calendar, from October 4-6th from at Mobility Resort Motegi.

AKI AJO – Team Manager

“We have mixed feelings about what happened with our Moto2 riders this weekend. Of course, Celestino’s expectations were really high after his victory at Misano. Unfortunately, he didn’t ever find the best feeling during the whole weekend. He felt better yesterday, but his early crash in qualifying made him start so far back that it was not easy in the race. On top of that, a small mistake at the beginning took him down the order again. It was a challenging race in which he tried to catch the Top 10. It was a weekend to chalk up to experience, but we will be fighting at the top at Motegi again. I have seen a very positive weekend from Deniz. After his great podium in Aragon, the weekends at Misano were more challenging for him. As we’ve already seen, we are placing higher and higher up, and his confidence is getting better and better. This weekend, in this extreme heat conditions, with strong wind and a lack of grip, he finished in the Top 10. It’s a great experience for him and he is showing his great potential in this category.”

#13 CELESTINO VIETTI

“Unfortunately, today I wasn’t fast enough to try to fight for a good result. In the end, I tried my best, but it wasn’t enough. Especially at the beginning, I struggled a little bit, then I found my pace and it was a bit better, but it hasn’t been a super great weekend. Now we will take some days off, we will learn from this and we will come back stronger in Japan. Thank you to all the team for the great job they did this weekend, especially yesterday after the crash. I will try to give them what they deserve in Japan.”

#53 DENIZ ÖNCÜ

“It was a positive weekend for me in Indonesia. After some bad weekends, we have taken some big steps forward here and we are back again. We have gained some good experience in the race, and I also really enjoyed today. I am especially happy to have been able to fight for the top positions. We will work now to try to understand where we can improve and we will prepare for the next race in Japan to try to push again.”
