Third win of the season for Celestino Vietti at Sepang

03/11/2024

The Italian rider leads the race from start to finish, with Deniz Öncü in seventh position.

The Malaysian Grand Prix ended well for Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2, as Celestino Vietti overcame discomfort in his shoulder to claim his third win of the season. Deniz Öncü was also very consistent and climbed positions, crossing the finish line in tenth.

Vietti had a very clear strategy after taking third in qualifying and returning to the front of the grid. The Italian made a great start, getting into the lead and trying to increase the gap from the opening laps. He managed his race perfectly, while also battling discomfort and the high temperatures of Sepang. Despite a small scare, Vietti was able to recover, secure his position and extend his lead again, setting a pace that was difficult for his rivals to match. He earned his third victory of the season.

Öncü also had an outstanding performance at the Malaysian Grand Prix, starting from fifth position -one of his best qualifying results this season. He completed an intense series of opening laps and maintained a consistent pace, trying to stay in the group in order to be able to compete for the Top5. On the final straight, the Turkish rider was alone in seventh position, a position he held to the chequered flag.

Due to the tragic situation with storm and flood damage that has seriously affected the Valencia region, the Valencian GP has been cancelled and the series organisers are expected to announce the date and location of the last round of the 2024 season shortly.

Aki Ajo – Team Manager:
“I am really happy overall with our performance here at Sepang. During the whole weekend our riders showed their top level -in practice and in the race as well. Especially with Cele, his performance in the race was really incredible, as since the first lap he has led the way and showed his dominance, despite the injury from the last two weeks to his collarbone. We are really happy. Deniz showed again a really good working spirit and performance during the weekend. This race was once again something for the future. Weekend by weekend he has shown more and more professionalism and talent in this high level class.”

#13 CELESTINO VIETTI

“I didn’t expect this victory. It’s been a difficult weekend in terms of the pain I felt, but we’ve managed it very well with the physio. So thanks to him and the whole team, because they gave me a very good bike from the start of the Grand Prix, and especially in qualifying. It’s been a difficult year, but today we managed to do a very good job and get the victory. I’m thinking of the victims of the tragedy in Valencia, I send them all my support and I hope everything gets better soon.”

#53 DENIZ ÖNCÜ

“We have finished the Malaysian Grand Prix. It was a good weekend for us. We worked really hard and in the race I pushed a lot, but the conditions weren’t easy. Anyway, we can say we are happy with the weekend, with our performance, rhythm and pace. We keep improving and let’s focus now on the final race of the year.”
