Öncü places 19th at United Kingdom Grand Prix
25/05/2025A difficult Sunday sees the Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 rider unable to celebrate his 100th Grand Prix with a points-scoring finish.
Deniz Öncü had a tough Sunday at the United Kingdom Grand Prix, as the Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 rider left Silverstone empty handed on the occasion of his 100th Grand Prix. Despite a very good start to the weekend, he could only place 19th on race day.
Overnight rain had left the track damp, but only a few metres remained so by the time the Moto2 race got underway.
Öncü started from 18th on the grid, on the dirty side of the track, but took advantage of the outside line on the opening corners of the first sector. At the end of the first lap, the Turkish rider had already made up three positions, although he lost them again after making a small mistake at the start of the second lap. Several crashes in the middle of the pack allowed the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider to re-enter the Top 15, but ahead of him a gap to the other riders had increased significantly.
He found himself immersed in the fight for 14th place with up to seven other riders, who remained close together until well into the second half of the race. In the final stretch, with tyre wear taking its toll, the gap to them was extended slightly, and Öncü was unable to fight for points. He took the chequered flag in nineteenth place. Öncü is now 11th in the Moto2 World Championship, with 37 points.
The seventh Grand Prix of the season comes to an end for the Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 team, which leaves Silverstone without being able to add points to its scoreboard despite having started the first half of the weekend in a good way. The World Championship will return in two weeks’ time with the Aragon Grand Prix, which will take place from May 30th to June 1st.

NIKLAS AJO – Team Manager
“We had a little bit of a weekend to forget in general, after finding out about Collin’s injury on Monday and him missing this round – and next few rounds as well. Obviously, for some reason, Deniz couldn’t find a good feeling during the whole weekend. The team were working really hard during the three days, but unfortunately, we couldn’t really find the way here in Silverstone. We have to look forward now and try to do it well at Aragon.”

“The United Kingdom Grand Prix is finished and it was not our best Sunday. Honestly, I didn’t finish the last two races in the best way, so I’m a little disappointed and also frustrated with the second part of the weekend here at Silverstone. We need to understand what is happening to keep improving and to get back to our best. It’s hard to see where we are, but now it’s the time to come back home and prepare as much as I can for the Aragon GP during the next two weeks.”
