Öncü and Veijer kick off second double-header in Sachsenring
09/07/2025The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 team wants to extend its good run at Germany, with five wins and eight podiums in the nine editions it has contested there.
Deniz Öncü and Collin Veijer visit the legendary Sachsenring track this weekend, to kick off the second double-header of the Moto2 season, which will finish in the Czech Republic next week. The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 pair take on the shortest track in the World Championship, and one where the team have been on the podium in eight of the nine editions since they joined the category in 2015, with five victories.
Öncü comes into the event with the confidence of having been among the fastest riders at the last three Grands Prix. After his victory at MotorLand, the Turkish rider finished sixth in Italy, and was on course for a strong result in the Dutch TT before crashing out midway through the race. The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 rider was competing at Assen for the first time with a Moto2 bike, but was able to qualify tenth and ride in podium positions for the first third of the race. He also has a good memory in Germany, albeit one that does not include participation last year, as an injury sidelined him for the round. Previously, he has raced there three other times as a Moto3 rider, achieving his first victory in the World Championship in 2023 with Red Bull KTM Ajo. In 2022, he finished seventh. After ten races in the current campaign, Öncü is eighth in the standings with 72 points.
For Veijer, the Dutch TT was his home race, at which he scored two points and continued to move closer to full fitness following his arm injury. His goal at the Sachsenring will be to repeat what he achieved two weeks ago, but the challenge won’t be easy, as, like his teammate, he has yet to ride a Moto2 bike in Germany. The Dutchman has never scored points in Germany as a World Championship rider, and he finished 18th there last year in Moto3; starting from Pole for the first time in 2024, he suffered a crash on Lap 2 and remounted to take the chequered flag. Also on his CV is a podium at the Sachsenring in his second season of the Red Bull Rookies Cup, in which he took second in Race 2. In Race 1, he scored points with a fourth place. Veijer has 13 points this season and is 20th in the overall standings.
In what will be the weekend that completes 50% of the season, Deniz Öncü and Collin Veijer want to achieve a good result to face the second part of the double that will end in Brno in an positive dynamic.
Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2, who are currently seventh in the Team standings with 85 points, have been able to master the circuit in recent years with wins for Johann Zarco (2016), Brad Binder (2018), Remy Gardner (2021), Augusto Fernandez (2022), and Pedro Acosta (2023). In addition, they have four other podium finishes there, making it nine rostrums at the track in the last nine seasons.
Moto2 action at the Sachsenring starts on Friday morning at 09:50am (local time) with Free Practice 1. Sunday’s 25-lap race kicks off at 12:15pm.

“Sachsenring is a place where I have very fond memories, because I achieved my first World Championship victory there. This year it will be different because it’s my first time there with the Moto2 bike, so it will be very important to adapt as quickly as possible to the track, in order to start working on our race pace sooner. The goal is simple: Earn the maximum number of points and arrive at the last race before the summer break in the best possible shape.”
#95 COLLIN VEIJER
“I’m feeling very excited about this weekend. We’ll see how the weather is in Sachsenring, because it looks like it’s going to be very wet, so maybe the Grand Prix will be very different to what we have been used to this year. I’m feeling good, so let’s see how my arm holds up and how much we can improve throughout the weekend. Overall, I’m very motivated to achieve a good result in Germany, so we will try to enjoy it and give our all, as always.”
