Twelfth place for Veijer at Australian Grand Prix

19/10/2025

The Dutchman scores points after a very competitive second half of the race. Daniel Muñoz finishes in 21st.

Collin Veijer claimed twelfth place at the Australian Grand Prix, courtesy of a strong second half of the race and excellent tyre management. Stand-in teammate Daniel Muñoz had to settle for 21st, after finding himself caught up in the fight within the pack during the opening laps.

Track conditions on raceday were windy, with gusts slightly reducing in force as the morning progressed, and track temperatures of 21ºC.

Veijer got off to a good start, holding onto 15th place and then gaining a position before the end of the second lap. However, the middle of the pack was very tight, and kept the Dutchman reigned in. He gradually found his pace and was very competitive in the second half of the race, gradually breaking away from the group he was in and climbing into the Top 15. He needed two laps to catch Ayumu Sasaki and Adrian Huertas as his superior tyre management paid off,  and eventually crossed the line twelfth. Less than a second away from a Top 10 finish, he took four points to climb to 57 overall. He is 19th in the standings.

There was a similar start for Muñoz, who dropped one place on the first lap. However, slightly further back than his teammate, he was hindered by the bottleneck in the middle of the field, and found himself stuck in the tussle for the Top 20. In the second half of the race, the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider tried to move up the order, but was hampered by his not having been able to work extensively on his race pace over the weekend due to rain. He took the chequered flag 21st, just a tenth off the 19th place he had been fighting for throughout the race. Muñoz remains in 22nd place in the overall standings with 23 points.

A twelfth consecutive Sunday in the points for Red Bull KTM Ajo takes them up to 180, and eighth in the Team standings. Next up is the Malaysian Grand Prix on October 24-26th, which will be the 20th round of the season for the intermediate class.

NIKLAS AJO – Team Manager

“Unfortunately, in Moto2 we were once again hindered by the Qualifying positions of both of our riders. Collin especially showed a lot of pace during all the Practices, but in Q2 he couldn’t place as high up as we had hoped, and this penalises you a lot in this class in terms of the race. At the end of the race, he was running the same laptimes as the guys at the front, but unfortunately he couldn’t make too much progress to get away from the group. There’s still a lot to improve in this area for him, but we’re seeing the progress he’s making in all of the rounds. Dani suffered a little bit more, but it’s not easy to finish well on your first time at Phillip Island. He needs more time to adapt to a new circuit like this, and of course, more track time in dry conditions. We didn’t have the best conditions this weekend, so whilst the result is not what he was aiming for, it’s part of the learning process for a rookie. We’re looking forward to the next race in Malaysia.”

#95 COLLIN VEIJER

“I’m happy with today’s result. Finally, we managed to start a little bit better and maintain the position during the opening laps, so I’m satisfied with that -because it is something that hindered us before. From there, I tried my best to gain as many places as possible, but it was not easy with such a big group in the first part of the race. My pace was quite good and we had a strong second part of the race to finish very close to the Top 10. Now it’s time to focus on Malaysia and try our best again there.”

#17 DANIEL MUÑOZ

“It was another tough race. We could tell that we were lacking track experience here, as it was our first time at Phillip Island, and we also didn’t get as much time in the dry as we would have liked over the weekend. That aside, I think we learned a lot this weekend. We discovered many things that I’m sure will help us going forward, so we’re resetting and, starting now, looking ahead to Malaysia. As always, I’m very grateful to everyone at Red Bull KTM Ajo for the opportunity, the trust in me, and all the work they’ve done.”
