Veijer secures first Moto2 podium after a great race in Portugal
09/11/2025The Dutchman, who placed second after leading for much of the race, missed out the win by just 0.090 seconds at Portimão. Dani Muñoz finishes eleventh after a good Sunday.
Collin Veijer took his first Moto2 World Championship podium, with second place at the Portuguese Grand Prix. The holder of the fastest lap of the race for the first time and just 90 thousandths of a second behind the winner, led the way for 15 laps at Portimão and now overtakes several rivals in the overall standings. Dani Muñoz battled relentlessly for ninth place, taking the chequered flag in eleventh at the end of one of the best weekends of the season for Red Bull KTM Ajo.
Track conditions were ideal for the 21-lap race, with temperatures of 24°C and humidity just above 50%.
Veijer moved into second place when the lights went out, chasing series leader Diogo Moreira. As the two tried to break away together, the Dutchman launched his attack on Lap 3, leading an intermediate class race for the first time. His great pace gradually whittled down the leading group until only Moreira and David Alonso remained. Past the halfway point of the race, Veijer began to open up a gap over his pursuers of up to 8 tenths of a second on second-placed Moreira. When tyre management came into play, Moreira was able to catch Veijer, who had held the lead for 15 laps, and pass him. Nevertheless, the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider held off Alonso and Aron Canet, and attempted to attack Moreira on the final sector. He missed out on victory by just 90 thousandths of a second, but claimed his first podium finish in the class, with the best lap of the race included. The 20 points put Veijer on 84 overall, and he moves into 15th place in the standings.
Muñoz also made a great start from tenth on the grid -having been relegated there due to a penalty-, moving up to seventh before he was smothered in the middle of the pack. He had to contend with several overtaking moves from rival riders after the second lap and, despite having the pace to be at the front of the field, he dropped out of the Top 8. By maintaining consistency and gaining valuable experience of the mid-pack battles, he was able to conclude the race strong towards the end and overtake several riders, crossing the finish line in eleventh place. Earning five points, he took his sixth Top 15 finish of the season. With 37 points in total, Muñoz remains 20th in the overall standings, ahead of several riders who have completed many more races.
In conclusion, it was an excellent Sunday for Red Bull KTM Ajo, which added a podium finish and 25 points to close out one of the best rounds of the season. With 221 points, the team remains seventh in the team standings and heads into the final round motivated and eager to close out 2025 in the best possible way. The final round of the season -the Valencian Grand Prix- will take place at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo from November 14th to 16th.

NIKLAS AJO – Team Manager
“We had a very positive weekend from the beginning. Both riders were on the pace from Friday. Collin especially was very strong, and had a very good Qualifying, achieving a front row start for the second time this season. I’m very proud of the team today, and Collin as well, after a very dominant performance. Unfortunately, he lacked a little something in the end, but finishing on the podium in his rookie season, after all the struggles at the beginning of the year, is something to be very, very proud of. I’m sure this was the first of many with him. Dani struggled a little bit more on Friday to find a good lap time, but on Saturday he took a great step forward in Qualifying, and went through to Q2. Today, he had a big moment in the middle of the race, but he managed to overtake other riders and had a strong performance. Overall, I’m very proud of both of them and very grateful to all the team for their hard work.”
#95 COLLIN VEIJER
“The start of the race was not very good, but we managed to recover a position at the end of the straight, so I’m very happy about that. After that, I was able to overtake Diogo and we showed great pace at the front. The tyres didn’t show a lot of degradation, so we were able to enjoy riding today. With six laps remaining, I started to lose a little bit of strength in my right arm, so I suffered a lot from there on. I tried to stay in the lead, but Diogo passed me. On the last corner, I tried to get closer and closer, but I didn’t have enough of a slipstream to take the win. We placed second and I’m very happy with this weekend overall. We took a big step forward here and we enjoyed ourselves a lot, so I’m very proud of all the team for their work.”
#17 DANIEL MUÑOZ
“It was a tough race today. I had enough pace to fight further up the field, but on the third lap I had a scare that cost me four positions and left me with no chance of catching the leading group. In the second half of the race, my forearms started bothering me, and we just had to fight our way through to the end. I’m happy to be back in the points and to have started finding some consistency over the weekend, and I’m very grateful to the team for this opportunity they’ve given me in Portugal.”
