Eleventh place at Balaton for Rueda’s best result in Moto2

The Spaniard scores points for the third consecutive race. Veijer crashes when in seventh place and remounts for 23rd.

Jose Antonio Rueda finished in the points for the third consecutive Grand Prix at the Hungarian round of the Moto2 World Championship. The Spaniard made a good start at Balaton Park and improved as the laps went by, finishing in eleventh place for his best result in the intermediate category to date. Collin Veijer suffered a crash on Lap 6, which relegated him to last place. However, he completed the race at a good pace until the final lap, riding alone.

There were favourable conditions on Sunday morning, with a track temperature of 45°C and 47% humidity at Balaton Park.

Rueda maintained a Top 15 spot off the line, after starting 14th on the grid – his best position of the season so far. He settled into a group fighting for ninth place, then rose to the head of a seven-rider pack, breaking into the Top 10. However, fatigue and the physical demands of Balaton Park took their toll on the final laps, forcing him to settle for 11th place. Nevertheless, it was his best result of the season and a third consecutive Top 15 finish. Rueda continues to lead the Rookie of the Year ranking, with 13 points, and gains two positions in the overall standings for 18th.

Veijer also managed to maintain his starting position on a tricky first lap in Hungary. Pursuing the Top 7 for the first six laps, he then lost the front end of his bike on the entry to Turn 5, sending him to the ground. By the time he remounted, he had been lapped and was in last place. Veijer rode the rest of the race alone, demonstrating a consistently fast pace; he was the fourth fastest rider on the final lap. With this result, the Dutchman dropped to 12th in the overall standings with 36.5 points.

All in all, it was a bittersweet Sunday for the Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 team, which came close to securing two very positive results with both riders in Hungary following a remarkable weekend. Red Bull KTM Ajo added five points to their tally in the Team standings, where they have 49.5 and maintain tenth position. The next stop for the Moto2 World Championship will be the Automodrom Brno, from June 19th-21st, for the Czech Republic Grand Prix.

NIKLAS AJO – Team Manager

“In Moto2, I have to see the glass as half full. In Jose Antonio’s case, the progression is there and he’s been showing really good potential during the last few weeks. On Friday, he got straight through to Q2 for the first time, which was very positive. He still needs to improve a little bit in Qualifying, but today he showed good pace during the race -especially in the second part. With Collin, the weekend was very positive in general, but the mistake in the race was very unfortunate. He did well after the crash, which means the speed is there and we can be confident for the next few rounds.”

#95 COLLIN VEIJER

“Everything was going well until we made a mistake at Turn 5. The start was good, which isn’t easy with a first two corners like we have here at Balaton Park. We managed to keep our position during the first lap, and were comfortable in seventh. The pace was there, so we were able to fight for a good position at the end. Unfortunately, on the sixth lap a mistake led to us crashing. We managed to finish the race, and again we showed a good pace riding alone at the back, but it was not enough to get some points. We’ll take the positives away, because we had a good weekend overall.”

#98 JOSE ANTONIO RUEDA

“I’m happy with today’s performance. It’s a shame we couldn’t reach the Top 10, because we were close, but we know we can achieve that soon. I had my best start of the season so far, so I’m very satisfied with that. Obviously, we still have room for improvement in that area, but it’s a good foundation. The last few laps were tough, as I felt a drop in my arm strength -which is common on a circuit as physically demanding as this one. I just had to hang on however I could. Overall, I think today was the best day of the weekend, both in terms of how I felt and the results.”
