Fightback in Hungary for third consecutive podium for Carpe

07/06/2026

A perfect comeback for the Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 rider sees him go from 18th on the grid to third in the race. Brian Uriarte finishes fourth after an excellent race.

Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 team placed both their riders in the Top 4 at the Hungarian Grand Prix, as Alvaro Carpe made a great comeback from 18th on the grid to take third place and Brian Uriarte fought for the top spot, finishing fourth. Although the latter was involved in a late big crash, the final positions were decided on a countback to Lap 19, after a red flag.

Sunday provided perfect conditions for the Hungarian Grand Prix. With partly cloudy skies and the sun shining brightly over Balaton Park, track temperature rose to 40°C with 46% humidity.

Carpe had an excellent start, allowing him to overtake many riders who took more risks on the first two corners. He went from 18th on the grid to 11th in just one lap, and from 11th to sixth on the second. He then joined up with his teammate to lead the chase for the Top 4, which remained within 1.3 seconds until past the halfway point of the race. Working with David Muñoz until Lap 12, he caught the podium battle, taking third place on Lap 15. In the closing stages, he launched a clever attack to overtake Uriarte and Muñoz, and when both of his fellow competitors were involved in the incident that brought out the red flag, Carpe secured third place. It was his third podium finish in a row -his fourth of the season- and keeps him second in the overall standings with 111 points.

Uriarte navigated the always tricky first corner at Balaton Park. The rookie, starting from third on the grid, managed to stay in the Top 5 positions for the first two laps, trying not to lose touch with the leading riders. However, the strong push from the Top 4 broke up the group, leaving Uriarte leading the chase. With Carpe, he worked to try to break away from those behind them, but the pace set by his teammate and Muñoz proved too fast, and Uriarte dropped to 1.3 seconds behind the podium contenders after Lap 12. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rookie dug deep to rejoin the group, and by Lap 14 had achieved his objective. He overtook the two KTM Tech 3 riders, moving back into the Top 5 several laps later, and with Carpe in fourth, pushed for a podium finish. However, just before the chequered flag, he was involved in an incident that led to a heavy crash.

Fortunately for Uriarte, he escaped unharmed, and he picked up his bike to return to the pits. That allowed him to secure the fourth position he had held on Lap 19, the last considered valid for the final standings. It was Uriarte’s second-best result in the class and brings his total to 72 points, in 5th in the overall standings.

In conclusion, it was a great Sunday for Red Bull KTM Ajo in race terms, although luck was also on their side following the multiple crash on the final lap, allowing them to count on Uriarte’s 13 points – in addition to Carpe’s 16 – to climb to 183 points. Which this, the team consolidates their second place in the team standings after five podiums in the first eight race weekends. The next round sees them travel to the Automotodrom de Brno, for the Czech Republic Grand Prix on June 19th-21st.

NIKLAS AJO – Team Manager

“We finished the weekend on a very good note after a difficult start on Friday. Alvaro managed to come back today in the race after a bad qualifying position, achieving a very important result for him to keep the streak he started in Barcelona going. We need to be a little bit more consistent during the weekend, but I know he has the speed to do it. Brian showed great progress throughout the three days at a new track for him. The layout at Balaton is not easy, but he learnt really fast, with a great grid position and great pace today during the race. Unfortunately, the race did not finish as he wanted, but we took very important points for the standings. We want to send David Muñoz our best wishes and wish him a speedy recovery.”

#83 ALVARO CARPE

“It was a hard-fought race. First of all, I hope all the riders involved in the crash are okay, as it was a very scary incident. As for the race, the final overtake was incredible. I didn’t think we could do it twice, but we did. Right after that, we braked late to hold our position, and it worked out perfectly. Obviously, we were all pushing to the limit on the last few laps in terms of tyre degradation, but we managed to recover, fight back, and be where we needed to be -so I’m very happy with how we managed this Sunday.”

#51 BRIAN URIARTE

“It was a very eye-opening race today in Hungary. We had many different situations to learn from, and I think we gained experience from all of them. It’s a shame about the accident we had with David, as I couldn’t avoid the contact. I wish him all the best, and I hope he can recover as quickly as possible. As for that last lap, my podium chances were still alive. Fortunately, we were clever in trying to get back to the pits with our bike, and we got some important points this weekend -which is what counts in the end.”
