Carpe and Uriarte, fourth and fifth, have strong showings at a very fast and demanding Aragon Grand Prix for the Moto3 class.

The thirteenth Grand Prix of the season saw Red Bull KTM Ajo narrowly miss out on a podium finish on race day, with Alvaro Carpe fourth and Brian Uriarte fifth at MotorLand Aragon in a very fast and demanding contest amidst high temperatures.

With an air temperature of 26º and a track temperature of 39º, the Moto3 race took place under clear skies and bright sunshine at MotorLand, creating extreme conditions for the smallest class on the World Championship grid.

Carpe took off from seventh on the grid, and showed great intelligence saving his energy and trying not to disturb the race leaders in front. In the Top 5 throughout much of the race, he let his rivals at the front set the pace, but without losing touch with them, and in the first four laps he had moved into third place. He was part of a breakaway for the four riders at the front, building a two-second lead over the chasing pack by Lap 6. With two-thirds of the race completed, the race leader tried to create a gap at the front, but Carpe pushed the pace trying to be in the fight until the final lap, where he conceded ground due to tyre wear. Finally, he placed fourth at the Aragon Grand Prix, and holds his second place in the Moto3 World Championship with 159 points.

Starting sixth, Uriarte had a Long Lap penalty to complete during the race, and waited to do so until Lap 4, minimising the loss of positions to drop him to tenth. Three laps later, he was back into fifth, chasing the group ahead of him. However, despite eventually opening up distance over the rest of the pursuing group, and running a similar pace to those ahead of him, he could not reel in the Top 4 and took the chequered flag in fifth place after a great race. Uriarte remains in fourth place in the overall standings with 138 points.

With something less than both rider hoped today, the team earned important points from both Carpe and Uriarte. Now, Red Bull KTM Ajo are still currently in second place in the Team Standings with 297. The Moto3 World Championship will return to action in a fortnight’s time with the San Marino Grand Prix, held at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli on September 11-13th.

“It was a very bittersweet Sunday. Collin probably had one of his best weekends in Moto2 overall. He was constantly up there, feeling good, riding well, so we can be very proud of him. But, unfortunately, a tiny mistake today had very big consequences and meant he collected no points in the end. The most important thing is that he’s okay and he was back where he should be, so I think he can be proud and look ahead to the next few races. With Jose Antonio, I think on Friday he was struggling a little bit more than expected and then was constantly improving throughout the weekend. Unfortunately, that wasn’t enough to fight for points today, but I believe that if he could have had a little bit of a better Qualifying yesterday, he had the pace to be up at the front. As always, that’s not easy for a rookie. The level is really high in Moto2, so we just have to keep working harder and we’ll get closer to the top all the time.”

“We had fun today. The weekend was positive and we worked well, but we didn’t quite pull it off in the final laps. The others managed their tyres a bit better than I did, and it ended up costing me on the final straight. We knew tyre wear would be tricky here at MotorLand, but we gave it our all, as always. Now it’s time to focus on the next round and try to prepare for that final part of the race, which is what we’re struggling with the most right now.”

“We’re happy with today’s race. We gave it our best, but fifth place was all we could aspire to reach. With the Long Lap and the strong pace at the front, I couldn’t close the gap, and without any reference points to follow, it was difficult. However, the feeling was very good; we showed a very good pace and worked well throughout the weekend, so there are a lot of positives to take away. We scored important points for the standings, and now we’re thinking about San Marino.”
