A fifth podium of the season for the Spaniard returns him to second place in the standings. Uriarte crashes on the last lap while battling for the rostrum.

A bittersweet Sunday for Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 saw them close to a Silverstone podium one-two. Alvaro Carpe took his fifth podium of the season after a last-lap comeback for second place, whilst Brian Uriarte crashed on the final lap while running second, finishing in 19th position.

The Moto3 class closed out Sunday’s races at the British Grand Prix, starting at 2:30pm (local time), with temperatures reaching 48°C on track and extra grip from the other contests held during the day laying down rubber.

Carpe made a perfect start, moving from fifth to second with some slick attacking riding. By doing so, he prevented the leader from pulling away, then stayed in the front group for the opening laps. The Spaniard was up in the Top 3 during the initial laps, waiting for the group to finally break up. This happened after Lap 7, with six riders at the front and almost three seconds between them and the chasing pack. On the last three laps, when Carpe seemed to be losing ground as he dropped to fifth place, he put in another great final lap. Overtaking two rivals and benefitting from a crash by his teammate, he secured second place and his fifth podium finish of the season. Alvaro also made the fastest lap of the race, the fourth time as a Moto3 rider. With 146 points in the overall standings, Carpe returns to second place.

Uriarte got off the line well from seventh on the grid, moving up to third on the first lap. Demonstrating the strong pace he had run throughout the weekend, he took the lead on Lap 3 and managed to stretch out the group. However, it wasn’t enough to break away fully, and he remained amongst the frontrunners until the final third of the race. With two laps to go, Uriarte moved back into the Top 2, but a crash on the final lap ended his chances of a podium finish. He remounted to complete the race, albeit in 19th place. Uriarte now drops to fourth in the overall standings with 127 points, and is still the top rookie in the class.

After this twelfth Grand Prix of the season, Red Bull KTM Ajo earns eighth podium finish of the season and consolidates their second place in the Team standings, with 273 points.

The Moto3 World Championship takes another two-week break before resuming at MotorLand Aragon, for the Aragon Grand Prix on August 28-30th.

“It’s a shame to end the Grand Prix like this. We felt very good all weekend and today we came very close to having a great race. We lacked a bit of speed, but we were ready to defend our spot well at the end. It’s a pity; I made a mistake and I’m sure we’ll learn from it. The good thing is that we’re consistently at the front and we continue to do that on circuits that are new to me. Now it’s time to focus on preparing for Aragon and giving our best there.”
