Vietti and Öncü face first race of double header as Moto2 moves on to Barcelona
22/05/2024The Catalan Grand Prix will be the next challenge for the intermediate class riders.
The Red Bull KTM Ajo team begin their first run of back-to-back races of 2024 this weekend, as the Circuit de Barcelona – Catalunya holds the sixth round of the year. Celestino Vietti will have a medical examination to decide his participation, while Deniz Öncü heads to Spain ready to continue improving his results in Moto2.
Vietti continues to recover from a fracture to his left collarbone, which ruled him out of the French Grand Prix. The Italian has worked intensely on his recovery during these past two weeks, even riding a motorcycle to test his feeling before this weekend’s event. Vietti arrives in Barcelona with great motivation and, although he will have to pass the medical check to receive the fit to ride, he is confident that he will be able to have a solid weekend and resume the workplan established at the tests prior to his injury. With 29 points he is eleventh in the overall standings.
Öncü has achieved good results at the Circuit de Barcelona – Catalunya in the past, although this will be his first time there in the intermediate class. The Turkish rider, who is feeling increasingly comfortable on the bike, targets taking further steps forward in this challenging season. He is also looking to add to his points tally: With 3 to his name, he is 21st overall in Moto2.
Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 are currently seventh in the Team standings with 32 points. In previous editions of the Catalan Grand Prix, they have one win -with Remy Gardner in 2021- and a further five podium finishes. The Moto2 race will be held on Sunday, May 26th at 12:15 pm local time.

“I’m excited to go to Barcelona. I really want to see after the check if I’m ready to ride the bike -and especially to see how I can ride it. This is a track at which we were fast in the past, so I want to continue in the same way as during the test at Jerez. We improved our feeling there and we found something for my riding style. I hope to be able to ride, have a solid weekend and improve in every session.”#53 DENIZ ÖNCÜ
“We are heading to Barcelona still trying to understand everything, but we are taking good steps in each race and each weekend. We have another opportunity to improve and I really want to push as much as possible at the moment. I have got great results in Barcelona, so I think that we can do well.”
