Ninth and thirteenth for Veijer and Rueda at Mugello

31/05/2026

A solid Sunday for Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 dup sees both riders earn important points at the Italian Grand Prix.

The Italian Grand Prix came to a close on Sunday with Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 securing important points for the Teams standings. Riders Collin Veijer and Jose Antonio Rueda took ninth and thirteenth, respectively, at the Autodromo Internazionale del Mugello to leave Italy with more confidence as they get ready for the second leg of this double tie in just a few days’ time in Hungary.

There were optimal conditions for a dry raceday at Mugello, with 46°C track temperature and 52% humidity. This required all the riders in the intermediate class to manage their tyres carefully, especially towards the end of the race.

Veijer capped off the weekend with a good result. He started from fifth on the grid, and remained in the Top 6 for the opening laps. However, the heat at Mugello made conserving tyres difficult, and he lost ground to the group fighting for fifth. In the final stages, the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider managed to hold onto ninth, just behind the rider in eighth place. The result gives him both points and valuable experience for the upcoming races, and he holds onto tenth position in the overall standings with 36.5 points.

Rueda improved throughout the race at Mugello, getting a good start from 21st and gaining a position on the first lap. He quickly overtook several other riders, moving into 17th place after just four laps. Immersed in the group battling for points, he managed his tires perfectly, breaking into the Top 15 on Lap 7, then performed strongly in the final third of the race. He passed two more rivals for a competitive finish; first in his group and just 3 seconds outside the Top 10. Thirteenth at the Italian Grand Prix is his second-best result in the intermediate class, and represented a second consecutive race in the points. Rueda now sits 20th in the overall standings with 20 points, and is top of the Rookie of the Year ranking.

In conclusion, it was a positive Sunday to round off a solid weekend that was important to boost the confidence of the Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 pair. This way, the team add 10 more points to their total for the season, rising to 44.5, which keeps them tenth in the Teams standings. They now move on to Balaton Park for the Hungarian Grand Prix, which takes place from June 5-7th.

NIKLAS AJO – Team Manager

“The race today was not bad, but obviously we were hoping for a little bit of a better result after a good weekend overall. In any case, after two difficult Sundays, we are back in the points with both of our riders, which is very positive for the team, so we just have to keep on working to improve our performance next weekend in Hungary.”

#95 COLLIN VEIJER

“Today we managed to score some valuable points in a difficult race. We got a decent start, enough to be fighting for the Top 5, but we lacked something during the second part of the race. Obviously, it’s not the result we wanted, but a Top 10 is a good base to start from after a difficult Sunday in Barcelona. It’s important for us to finish the race, and also to score points, so we need to take away the positives after this race day at Mugello. The weekend overall was not bad, so we will build on this next week in Hungary, where we achieved a great result last year.”

#98 JOSE ANTONIO RUEDA

“I’m quite happy with today’s result, so you could say it’s been a positive Sunday at Mugello. Our starts are still a bit difficult for us with a full fuel tank and the bottleneck that happens at many circuits -especially this one- but I think we’re gradually improving in that aspect. The rest of the race went well; I finished with a good feeling, and we got some important points from a weekend that had become slightly complicated. Overall, I’m satisfied and already thinking about next weekend, where we have another important challenge ahead.”
