Vietti, just thousands of a second off pole position at home Grand Prix
21/09/2024The Italian finishes fourth at Misano, in one of the tightest qualifying sessions of the year. Deniz Öncü does not make it past Q1 and will start 27th.
The Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli enjoyed an exciting day of qualifying this Saturday, with ups and downs for Red Bull KTM Ajo. Celestino Vietti fought until the end for pole position, taking fourth position. Deniz Öncü continues to work to feel as comfortable as possible for Sunday’s race, in which he will start from the ninth row.
Practice 2 for the intermediate class allowed the Red Bull KTM Ajo riders to continue working on their setups and improve their previous times from the weekend. Celestino Vietti got off to a good start after the progress made on the opening day. The Italian, who started Saturday in the Q2 positions on the combined timesheets, continued to up his pace and get closer to the leaders. After a pit stop, Vietti pushed, setting his best time on his penultimate lap: A 1:35.585 that put him in ninth place. Öncü placed an emphasis on recovering a good feeling and establishing the strategy for qualifying, and was up to a second faster than on Friday. The Turkish rider completed a total of 13 laps, setting a 1:36.565 best lap and finishing in 25th (26th in the combined timesheet).
Moto2 Q1 was a somewhat tricky session for Öncü, who tried to get into the Top 4. He gave it his all and, after a quick pit stop, he set his quickest time on the final laps. His 1:36.474 put him in thirteenth position, earning 27th on the grid. Vietti was in great form during Q2. With the times tight from start to finish, he chased pole position. He rode all-out until the end, focused on getting a perfect lap. On his final attempt, the Red Bull KTM Ajo rider was just 0.037s off pole, in one of the closest qualifying sessions of the season. He will begin the race from fourth position thanks to his 1:34.972.
The Moto2 race at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix will be held on Sunday from 11:15 am, local time.

“I’m happy, because what we tried yesterday worked well today. We found something interesting to help us improve and to ride more comfortably. In qualifying I tried to use these improvements to set a better lap time, and we did it. Unfortunately, it was not enough, because everybody was very close together in terms of their times, and I missed out on the front row. In any case, our speed is good and the grid position is good for tomorrow, although starting from the second row is something different if we compare it to last weekend. We have to focus on our start and I’m really happy with the work that we’ve done.”

“We have completed another day in Misano. It wasn’t an easy day for me because I’m not feeling really good, so I struggled to push really hard. Hopefully tomorrow I can improve my feeling and understand more things. We’ll try to undertake the race in the best possible way, as we want to enjoy it and get some points again. Let’s finish the weekend as best we can.”#
