Muñoz takes first Moto2 podium at Catalan GP

07/09/2025

The Spanish rider claims third at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya to open his World Championship record. Veijer finishes ninth to complete a strong weekend.

Daniel Muñoz achieved his first podium finish as a World Championship rider at the Catalan GP, rising from ninth place to fight for the runner-up spot. His teammate, Collin Veijer, completed a third consecutive weekend in the Top 10, with a ninth place from the visit to Barcelona.

Ambient temperatures were at 27°C and track temperatures at 33°C for the start of the Moto2 contest.

Muñoz was overtaken by several riders at the end of the initial straight, but fought back to conclude the opening lap in third place. He immediately attacked the two leading riders, who had an advantage of more than two seconds over the rest of the field. After two laps, which included him setting the fastest lap of the race, Muñoz caught Jake Dixon, easily overtaking him. In pursuit of Daniel Holgado, the race leader, he found his compatriot’s pace very high throughout the contest, and ended up fighting with Dixon for second place. His early exertion caused severe tyre wear, and late on he had no option but to let his rival get away and ensure third place on the final two laps. It was Muñoz’s first podium finish after fifteen Grands Prix, all in the Moto2 class. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider now has 19 points in the overall standings and occupies 20th place.

Veijer completed the opening lap in seventh, as part of a group that quickly established a gap over those behind them. He remained consistent in the position from the second lap onwards, rounding out the chasing pack and keeping something in reserve for the closing stages. In the final third, Veijer also suffered from tyre wear, and on the last five laps he was caught by the chasing group. The Dutchman made a great effort to hold them off, managing to secure ninth place overall and earn his third consecutive Top 10 finish. With an additional 7 points, he climbs to 39, remaining in 19th place in the overall standings.

All in all, Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 concludes one of the most competitive weekends of the season, with both riders finishing in the Top 10. The team have now scored four podium finishes this season in the intermediate class, and have a total of 158 points in the Team standings -in which they are in eighth place. Next up is the San Marino Grand Prix at the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli, from September 12-14th.

NIKLAS AJO – Team Manager

“The weekend was very good from the beginning. Collin continues to make great progress, as he did the last few races. Yesterday he got his first front row in Moto2, which is a big achievement. In the race, he was struggling a little bit at the end of the race with the tyres, but it’s another Top 10 -the third in a row in his rookie season-, which is very good. Daniel, on the other hand, had a great weekend and race. He’s a replacement rider with not that much experience, and celebrating a podium today is a great achievement for him. He’s been making very good progress in a lot of areas during the last few races. We couldn’t see this progress in the last couple of races perhaps, but here he was very fast and consistent straight away. He had an unfortunate crash yesterday morning, but it doesn’t matter, because all the time he worked very well and today he had a very good race.”

#95 COLLIN VEIJER

“Today the start wasn’t so bad, and overall we had a solid weekend. The race was a bit difficult as the front tyre was in quite a critical state in the end. I struggled a bit with the general feeling in the closing stages, and wanted to attack a little more. But we gained experience once again and we know what to do for the next few races. Our tyre choice would maybe be different next time, but overall we had a very good weekend. We take a lot of experience away from this weekend, and will carry it over to Misano.”

#17 DANIEL MUÑOZ

“I was a little nervous at the beginning, but after that, we managed to stay calm. The start wasn’t the greatest for us, but we were able to recover in the first three laps. We pushed quite hard at the beginning and lost a lot of time, and then halfway through the race we started to struggle a lot and dropped our pace a bit. In the end, we were able to maintain our podium position. I’m very happy and grateful to the team for all the work they’ve done. We hope to continue learning.”
