Can Öncü heads to Assen, ‘The Cathedral’ of motorcycle racing

26/06/2019

The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 rider is ready for the eighth round of the World Championship at the demanding Dutch track.

This week the World Championship visits one of the most legendary venues on the calendar, the TT Circuit Assen. Can Öncü is looking forward to the Dutch Grand Prix, after the good feeling he found in the test last week in Barcelona with his Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 team. Now the young Turkish rider is ready for the double-header of races in the Netherlands and Germany, before the summer break.

Can Öncü aims to put the Catalan Grand Prix behind him and fully focus on the Dutch GP, with Assen being one of his favourite circuits. In addition, the Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 rookie has good memories from this track, given that last year he finished first in both races held there in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup. Now he returns to ‘The Cathedral’ of motorcycle racing ready for the technical challenge that the circuit presents.

The lightweight category riders start the eighth race of 2019 on Sunday at 11:00 am local time. The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto3 team are familiar with the Assen podium: winning at the Dutch track with Luis Salom in 2013 and Miguel Oliveira in 2015, whilst in 2012 Sandro Cortese and Danny Kent, respectively, took second and third positions for the team.

“I feel ready for action after the test we had last week in Barcelona. We worked hard with an eye on this Grand Prix and we did several checks, in order to arrive in the Netherlands with a good set-up for the bike. Last year I had two races with the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup at Assen and got on the podium in both, so it’s a track that I like and of which I have fond memories. I know that if we are able to stay focused and calm, we can produce a good performance.”
