06/11/2022

The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 rider wins his first ever World Championship title.

Augusto Fernandez was crowned 2022 Moto2 World Champion at the Valencia Grand Prix. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider enjoyed a great year, achieving 4 victories, 9 podiums and 2 pole positions since the season began in March at the Qatar Grand Prix.

Fernandez began the year with his best result in Qatar, a fourth position. After some difficult first races, he earned his first podium with Red Bull KTM Ajo at the French Grand Prix, in what was also his first victory of the season. In the first half of the campaign, he added a further rostrum finish at the Catalan GP, with third place, and took off from the front row in Indonesia, Argentina and France.

Augusto Fernandez’s best performances have come in the second half of the season. The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 rider returned to action with three wins in a row at the Sachsenring, Assen and Silverstone. The British Grand Prix was a key moment of the campaign: After winning from pole position, he became the new leader of the Moto2 standings. In an intense end to the campaign, Fernandez took podium finishes three more times (in San Marino, Aragon and Japan) and arrived in Valencia as series leader.

Fernandez has completed the Grand Prix of Valencia being one of the dominators of the category, starting the race from the front row and finishing in 2nd position, adding a new podium to his record.

The newly crowned Moto2 World Champion will make the move up to MotoGP in 2023 as part of the KTM GP Academy program, after six years in Moto2 and his best season to date. It is a system implemented by the manufacturer to identify and develop top talent, through Moto3 and Moto2, and give them the opportunity to reach the MotoGP class.
