Öncü returns to the Top10 in a rainy race in Thailand

27/10/2024

The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 rider finishes tenth at the Thai Grand Prix.

The intermediate class race at the Grand Prix of Thailand was cut short due to rain at the Chang International Circuit. Deniz Öncü was very consistent from start to finish, gaining positions and earning points with tenth place.

Öncü started from fifteenth on the grid, and rode solidly from the first laps onwards. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider continued to take firm and confident steps, overtaking other riders and getting closer to the Top10. The threat of rain was constant and forced precautions to be taken to avoid making mistakes. Öncü grabbed tenth position and maintained a good pace, trying to catch up with the leading group despite the large gap to them. Rain fell on the final laps, forcing the race to be red flagged with two laps to go and confirming Öncü’s tenth place finish.

Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 returns to work next weekend for the Malaysian Grand Prix, from November 1st-3rd.

AKI AJO – Team Manager

“Unfortunately this weekend we only had one rider, as Celestino is still recovering. Hopefully he will be back at Sepang. Deniz had a good, consistent weekend from Friday. He had good speed, we just have to improve in qualifying. His potential is to be much higher up, and at this high level the starting positions are very important. A Top 10 result was good today, but our potential with a better grid spot is to fight for the top positions as well. Let’s continue to work like we are now and focus on getting a better qualifying position next week at Sepang.”

#53 DENIZ ÖNCÜ

“We have finished the ThailandGP. It was a good weekend where we were able to improve, so we have taken some steps forward. For sure, if I had done better in qualifying I could have been fighting for the top positions, because we had a good pace and could fight with the fastest riders. We are happy, but we will keep working and enjoying ourselves.”
