Veijer and Muñoz return to action in Portugal in good shape

05/11/2025

The Dutchman and the Spaniard will once again share a box at the penultimate round of the year. Öncü, who will have to miss one more Grand Prix, continues working to try to make it to the last race of the season.

The Red Bull KTM Ajo Moto2 lineup for the Portuguese Grand Prix will once again consist of Collin Veijer and Daniel Muñoz, the latter of who again rides for the team in the absence of Deniz Öncü. The Dutchman and the Spaniard, with the aim of adding another Grand Prix in the points zone, wants to continuing the good run they began in early August in Austria. At the last event held at the Sepang International Circuit, both managed to finish in the top ten: Muñoz crossed the finish line in 7th position and Veijer in 9th.

Veijer aims to continue making steady progress in the final part of his transition year in the class, where he has made a significant leap forward in results in the last eight races. He has finished in the points in seven of those eight races, with six of those finishes in the Top 10. At the recent Malaysian Grand Prix, he climbed up the order with excellent consistency in the second half of the race, placing 9th at Sepang. The Dutchman has previous experience at Portimão in Moto3, where he was 6th in 2024 and 12th in 2023. He also competed several times there in the Red Bull Rookies Cup and JuniorGP, achieving a victory and a podium finish in the former during the 2022 season. Veijer is currently 19th in the Moto2 World Championship standings, with 64 points.

Muñoz will potentially be riding in Moto2 for the last time this season, with Deniz Öncü back training on a bike as he continues to progress from his long-term leg injury, and trying to return for the 2025 finale in Valencia. The Spaniard will compete in his ninth consecutive round this weekend -his tenth event this season with the team. After a strong weekend in Malaysia, with a 7th place finish that was his second-best result as a World Championship rider, he will try to continue his good form in Portimão. Dani has raced in Portugal in the Red Bull Rookies Cup, where he finished 8th and 12th in 2021, and in JuniorGP, where he won in 2023 in the Stock class by almost 20 seconds. Last year, riding a Kalex in the Moto2 European Championship, he finished fourth in the first race, and crashed out in Race 2. Currently, Muñoz is 20th in the Moto2 standings, behind Veijer, with 32 points.

In seventh place in the Team standings by placing both riders in the Top 10 in Malaysia for the second time this season, Red Bull KTM Ajo have amassed 196 points. Previously, they have achieved three victories at Portimao in only six appearances: With Raul Fernandez (2021 Portuguese GP), Remy Gardner (2021 Algarve GP), and Pedro Acosta (2023). They also have three further podium finishes: Second places for Fernandez (2021 Algarve GP) and for Augusto Fernandez (2022), and third place for Gardner (2021 Portuguese GP).

In short, with the clear objective of ending the year on the same high note as the second half of the season, Veijer and Muñoz are approaching this final stretch in Europe with confidence and motivation. The Portuguese Grand Prix for the intermediate category will begin on Friday at 9:50 a.m. (local time) with Free Practice 1. The 21-lap Moto2 race on Sunday takes place at 11:15 a.m.

#95 COLLIN VEIJER

“Now it’s on to Portimao! I think we’re having a good last part of the season especially with us taking a lot of points from the flyaways, and we’re back in Europe now to finish things off in the best way at the last two races. I hope we can have a good weekend in Portimao, where we had a good test in preseason, so I’m looking forward to riding in Portugal this weekend. It’s a very nice track. It’s tough on you physically but I’m sure we will enjoy it. Let’s see how far we can go, and we’ll work as hard as we can.”

#17 DANIEL MUÑOZ

“I’m very happy to be able to compete in the Portuguese Grand Prix with the team. Portimão is a circuit I’ve always liked and I know it well, so that always gives me extra motivation. We’ll try to enjoy ourselves, as well as have a complete weekend and finish it off with a competitive race. I want to thank the team for this latest opportunity and also give a shout out to Deniz, who is working very hard and getting closer and closer to returning.”
